Its closest living relatives are the Wild Asian water buffalo (Bubalus arnee), the Tamaraw (Bubalus mindorensis), the Lowland anoa (Bubalus depressicornis), the Mountain anoa (Bubalus quarlesi) and the domestic water bufallo (Bubalus bubalis).
